Autoloading modules - How?

I built the 1.3.98 kernel followed by make modules and make install.

>From the modules.1.3.57 directory I ran make and make install.

I created a new file /etc/rc.d/rc.S with one line "/sbin/depmod -a".
I did chmod +x rc.S.

I still can't get the kernel to load modules automatically. I read
docs somewhere telling me how to do it but I just can't remember
where. Can someone give me a pointer?
