linux on HFS? why not HPFS instead?

With all of the discussion of HFS and UMSDOS, why not make a UMSDOS-type
filesystem on HPFS? It already has full support for long filenames. It
has 512-byte blocks (no brain damaged DOS clusters), and extended
attributes could very easily be used to store permissions and other data.
Symbolic links would be easy enough, as would device files and such
(extended attributes) and proper hard links should even be possible.
However, this is obviously a pretty long way off as we don't even yet
have read-write HPFS support yet. However, it would probably be a useful
tool for the (reasonably) transparent coexistance of Linux and OS/2 on
the same partiton without sacrificing features and performance.
