strange pty error

ive been restoring a hacked machine for a while now (grumble)
it runs linux 2.2.5-15, ipchains..
now the thing is i got this wierd error after reboot
ssh root@****
root's password:
Failed to allocate pty!

and after that i enabled telnet and then i got

Escape character is '^]'.
telnetd: All network ports in use.
Connection closed by foreign host.

realy wierd since i havent allocated all the ports..
anyone who could help me ?
