2.3.30,31 error in sound drivers

starting from 2.3.30 sound does not work in monolithic kernels.
modularized versions do fine, though (simple sb16 here) -
indicating that some error is in Makefiles or so.

isapnp is happy:

<4>isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total,

but syslog outputs:
