The problem occurs daily, soon after 04:00. Checking around reveals it's
running cron.daily at the time; apparently slocate (building the database
for locate) (it gets mentioned).
I have a similar system except with 64 Mbytes and RHL 5.x and a 2.2.13
kernel which does not have the problem.
Michelle (the system's owner) was talking about adding RAM to 64 Mbytes
RSN, possibly this week; I speculate the problem may go away then.
Hmm. May go away next time it's booted. It's been up 18 days, the problem
first arose Nov 26. The rpm files in /var/lib/rpm are all dated Aug 3, so
I've clearly not installed any rpm packages recently.
/etc is dated Nov 25 (the day before, but after that day's run). The only
file I see there that was changed is mtab and that looks fine.
