O_NONBLOCK on disk handles - before 2.5?

Is there any chance of Linux 2.4 implementing nonblocking I/O on disk handles?
2.5? ever? Many other unixes (and even NT !) implement it, and it is useful
in userspace fileservers (and kHTTPd), so....
I'm not subscribed to the list, I'm reading the archives, and I know this has
come up before, but... TFTYIA (including time involved in flame wars :)
