Ooops, I forgot to mention the hardware config: ASUS P2B-DS,
2xPII, 4-port 100BaseTX (21140).

While we are at it, (AFAIR since 2.3.16-pre1) I see strange messages
in my logs:

Sep 21 10:53:43 lech kernel: PCI: Address space collision on region 6 of device Matrox Millennium II

I set MTRR up at boot, using

echo "base=0xe0000000 size=0x800000 type=write-combining" > /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0xe2000000 size=0x800000 type=write-combining" > /proc/mtrr

Values 0xe0000000 and 0xe2000000 come from my AccelX server output.

12:33 [lech(p3)$/home/lech7] cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 128MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 8MB: write-combining, count=1
reg02: base=0xe2000000 (3616MB), size= 8MB: write-combining, count=1
