2.2.5-22 multiple CPUs

After compiling the 2.2.5-22 kernel for a single i686 CPU,
it boots and is perfectly happy. (distribution is RH60)

I then change the kernel config to support multiple CPUs,
do the same build/install commands. During boot, "depmod
-a" complains unresolved dependencies. Messages such as:

/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/fs/nfsd.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/fs/nfs.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/fs/coda.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/fs/lockd.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/irlan.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/wanpipe.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/cops.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/net/ltpc.o: unresolved symbol(s)
:

When inserting a single module ("insmod sound" in example,
it is a little more verbose:

/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
sound_init_lowlevel_driver
s_Rec0251af
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
unregister_sound_mixer_R7a
fc9d8a
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol __global_cli
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
sound_unload_lowlevel_driv
ers_Ra675fda1
/lib/modules/2.2.5-22/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
register_sound_special_Rce
1ac420
:

I also did a 'objdump --source -r' on some of the obj file,
but it isn't obvious what it is wrong. Can you help?

thx
