Hi,

I have experienced a kernel Oops with kernel version 2.2.12. The same
problem seems to occur with 2.2.11, though I haven't carefully compared
the Oops message. Here is the message (everything on the screen, can't
scroll up):

The system configuration is as follows:
Hardware:
DFI K6XV3+ Motherboard (VIA Chipset), ATX, 1MB Cache
AMD K6-2 400MHz Processor
1 128MB PC100 DIMM
Quantum Fireball 8.4GB ULTRA ATA/66 (Root drive)
Western Digital 2.1 GB (Not normally mounted)
Acer 40X Max IDE CD-ROM
Matrox G200 AGP, 8MB
ISA US Robotics 56K Modem
PCI LinkSys Etherfast 10/100 LAN Card (Tulip driver)
ISA SoundBlaster 16

Software:
Mandrake 6.0
Updated to Kernel 2.2.12 with attatched .config file
Kernel compiled with pgcc 2.91.66 (Could be a problem?)

This problem only happens right when I turn the machine on. Normally,
after getting used to this oops, I hit the reset button at the LILO
prompt and everything boots fine on the next try. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't
work, however. It needs a cold reboot.

I found that the 2.2.9 kernel shipped with Mandrake, and my custom
compiled version of it, had a problem as well, though with different
symptoms. It has the same characteristic of only happening on the first
boot after power-up, and doing that reliably.

Compiling 2.2.11 without support for the VIA chipset, and with the
processor type set to 386 results in a different message, though it
still only happens at the first boot. (As I said before, compiling it
with VIA support and AMD K6 support results in the message above, or
something similar.) I didn't record it, but this is the basic idea:

Bad slab magic (corrupt)
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer
Can't open console
Can't find init, try passing "init=" to kernel

If you want any more info, tell me what you need, because the problem is
very reliably present, so I'm sure I can reproduce it.

Finally, I'm not on this list, so please, please, CC any mail regarding
this issue to me at tomb@nccn.net.

Thanks,
Aaron Tomb
