But the 999 other customers who want the extra speed, reliability gained
from not implementing PAE support badly choose Linux.

This is the big big problem with so many products - they are too busy caring
about the one to worry about the 999 others. Sales demand a feature to sell
to a big customer without caring if it hits future sales in subtle ways.
