I have this EXACT chipset down to the revisions on an FIC VIA 503+.
It works perfectly.

Go shorten your cable.
I will bet that it is between 19" and 23" long.
18" is the limit end to end, including the wrap over.
17.5" is allows safe.

If lenght is a problem..........a 24" ATA-66 (80c) ribbon will do ATA-33
cleanly.........imperical tests only proof. This is not documented
anywhere that I know about. I did this as funny test, and it worked.
