2.2.10 OOM, then eepro100 died

Yesterday, we experienced the following:

Jul 1 13:25:06 alpha syslogd: select: Cannot allocate memory
Jul 1 13:25:14 alpha last message repeated 4695 times
Jul 1 13:25:18 alpha kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050 0080 at 42799941/42799956 command 000c0000.
Jul 1 13:25:18 alpha kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...
Jul 1 13:25:23 alpha kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050 0090 at 42799941/42799956 command 000c0000.
Jul 1 13:25:23 alpha kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...
... [last 2 eth0 messages repeated until rebooted]

Status on the first eth0 message is different from rest.

System is a dual PII-400 box running kernel 2.2.10 on Red Hat 5.2.
It has 512MB RAM and 4x136MB swap partitions. Eth0 is a eepro100.
