Hi everybody!

I was looking into some benchmarks and i find a interesting thing,
first i want to note that i am not a kernel hacker and i only can
figure what is happening and second i want to know what is
happening.

I realize a benchmark within different operating systems and
different architectures and processors with a tool know as
HINT wich gives a number called net Quips, what i can say is
if you want more information about HINT i urge you to look at

What i undestand is that HINT makes calculations first very
small and progressively incrementing filling the L1 cache, then
the L2 cache, then RAM and then swap (disk). The graph show
you what the hardware and different architectures can do. In
resume it gives you the potential a system have. I suppose
that linux have a very well designed and basic memory
management but this is not true. Linux outperforms the others
operating systems in swap management but i suppose it has
or is designed in a form that the L1 cache has many misses.
Note in the graph the line until the first fall is L1 cache, until
the second is L2, the third is RAM and the last is swap. The 1st.
graph gives you net Quips (y axis) and memory in bytes (x axis).
The 2nd. graph gives you net Quips and time in seconds.
Linux begins very slow, reach a point and keep it until it fall because
hardware contraints but the peak point is really bad.
FreeBSD have a extremely outperforming basic memory and IO
management. As you can note the kernel 2.2.6 and 2.0.36 have
the same rating. Linux gives me in the 300MHz machine 10M net
Quips and FreeBSD in the same machine 13M net quips. FreeBSD
takes 2.5 hours to complete the test and linux in both kernels takes
5 hours ( ?? :( ) The Windoze machine never complete the test
(well after 10 hours i hard reset the machine :)

Maybe this can help to achieve a better OS.
I am the administrator (network/system) in a University
in Guatemala and i have installed like 150 boxes with linux so
if you want more tests i have a full featured lab! ;)
