I had a similar problem when installing linux on my notebook. It has a
virge/mx-Chip, that allways blow up the console, when switching from X
to console-Mode. I installed a new X-Server (I'm running redhat-5.2,
and updated the X-Server to 3.3.3-1) and all was fine. It seems, that
the new XFree solves some locking-problems of the older Server.
