No sound

I just installed a new Slackware 3.6 system, and compiled a new kernel
with SB16 support for my SB AWE64 card, and I have no sound. Can anyone
assist? I have no sound via Quakeworld (which uses the /dev/dsp device),
nor do I have any CD Audio via workbone.
