Linux Version 2.2.5 kills syslogd

I have sysklogd-1.3-3. I think is's the latest. syslogd segfaults
so I don't have any logging.

gdb says it segfaults in main(), however, the address given can't
be listed or even disassembled, a very bogus 0xfcffe000.

Given this, I made a simple segfault program, compiled with 'g'
and attempted to list the faulting code. gdb returns bad info with
Linux 2.2.5. Have I got to update gdb also? Seems like something
has changed.
