2.2.1 SMP freezing on boot

The 2.2.1 kernel is freezing on my dual PII-333 machine with MB440LX
motherboard in SMP mode. After the kernel is loaded by lilo and the "now
booting kernel" message appears, the machine locks hard.

If the kernel is compiled identically but in UP mode, it works fine.

2.1.131ac13 and 2.0.36 boot fine (although the AMI MegaRAID driver isn't
very stable in these kernels so I never actually get to a shell prompt,
but the kernel boots fine).
