i don't see this as being relevant. there won't be anything
listening on the interface at this point.

route should be used to confige what remote networks are available
via which interface. (the exception would be when using ip
aliasing and you want to force a certain src ip addr when talking
to a particular destination)

if you say so. personally, i think it's the right way to do it.
cisco IOS adds the implicit route, btw.
