PCI probing fails?

2.2.0-pre4 fails to run on a HP LXr Pro8 we have here. The kernel dies
during start-up after this message:

PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfd8cc
PCI: Using configuration type 1
PCI: Probing PCI hardware

At this point nothing more happens. The machine has 8 PPro CPUs, 2GB
RAM (although I currently run with mem=512M) and two PCI buses. Kernel
2.0.36 works fine.
