Ok problem identified. Time appears to pass in interesting ways when measured by
RDTSC on my MediaGX. Putting a 'dodgy_tsc()' routine called early by arch/i386/kernel/time.c
in seems to have cured it. My MediaGXm is now running 2.1.131ac13andabit as well as
the new XFree 3.3.3 just great
