What was the previous kernel version?
UP or SMP?
Kernel compiled with SMP?

If it's UP compiled with SMP, try commenting out SMP in the Makefile and
see if that does the trick.

I hope when 2.2 ships, that the default goes back to SMP = 0, just because
99% of the systems that Linux will run on x86-wise, are UP.
