Are you sure your machine was *totally* locked up?

I've had this problem with xfstt aswell - X totally locked up. But the
machine is still going. It appears that xfstt can't handle some TT
fonts, so eg X requests a font, xfstt can't handle it and never get's
back to the X server. The X server waits an indeterminate time for a
response from the font server.. and so appears hung.

I've since switched to xfsft, an font server based on the free type
library, which hasn't given me any trouble at all. Also, as it's the
original xfs with true type support added, it can also serve your other
X fonts, so you can replace xfs with it. Configuration is exactly like
xfs aswell.
