IDE -> ATA DISK

The 2.1.x series kernel thinks that my IDE drive is an ATA DISK:

2.0.36:
hda: QUANTUM FIREBALL_TM1700A, 1628MB w/76kB Cache, CHS=827/64/63, DMA

2.1.12[0-9]:
hda: QUANTUM FIREBALL_TM1700A, ATA DISK drive
request_module[ide-disk]: Root fs not mounted
hda:driver not present
Kernel Panic....

THe problem occoured on these machines:

Quantum Fb.1700A in a i82371 PIIX (Triton) on PCI bus 0
WD 814 IDE in a 486 +IDE controller cmd640

The configurations are quite different, so I haven't go a clue..:(
