But on x86, it should be *very* hard to reconfigure the system
to boot directly into Linux again just by accessing /dev/* and
/proc/*.
If the BIOS doesn't want to boot from HD, it doesn't. Set it to
boot from CD first. Insert a CD (which is r/o).
It has already been pointed out that it might not be needed to
reboot the box to make changes affect. I'm thinking about
how to make an x86 system *not* be able to reboot (with
different settings or such) from remote.
If the system just stops with "CD not bootable. Insert a
bootable one" or such, this would be perfectly okay (assuming
that the kernel cannot crash).
