hd: can't get major 3 for hdd

or something similar (the machine's at home) :-)

2.1.129 with flu shot, er I mean patch. 486DX4/100 32MB RAM, nothing
special about the controller or kernel.

Originally I had compiled with "enable DMA on boot" but when booting the
kernel got as far as identifying the two HDDs (both IDE, linux on hdb)
then panicked trying to mount the root partition.

Booted to 2.0.30 and recompiled w/o this enable DMA and restarted. Same
thing. Now when I say "Lilo: linux hdb=1023,32,63" it will boot but gives
me that "can't get major 3" just before mounting root. without the
specification of hdb, the kernel panicks as mentioned above.

This machine went from 2.0.30 to 2.1.129 (new system) so I have no other
2.1.x kernels to try it out on. Is there something obvious I'm missing
here?
