The IDE chip on my older PC-Parnter 520N VX motherboard supports standard
DMA
busmastering.. but not UDMA..

seen here:

ide: i82371 PIIX (Triton) on PCI bus 0 function 57
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf
hda: QUANTUM BIGFOOT_CY4320A, 4134MB w/67kB Cache, CHS=527/255/63, DMA
hdc: Conner Peripherals 170MB - CP30174E, 161MB w/32kB Cache,
CHS=351/15/63

/proc/pci shows the IDE bus on this board as:

Bus 0, device 7, function 1:
IDE interface: Intel 82371SB PIIX3 IDE (rev 0).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. Master Capable.
Latency=32.
I/O at 0xffa0.

The QUANTUM drive will support UDMA but not with my motherboard..
I do however get 6meg or there abouts out of it..
(which is pretty good for a Quantum Bigfoot)

the BIOS is set for PIO mode 4, BusMastering enabled, 32bit access and
Large block transfer.

[22:06:12] root:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 3.48 seconds =36.78 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 9.31 seconds = 6.87 MB/se

and this is on a P166 with 64meg EDO ram..
so if you have a faster machine, with a newer motherboard and are getting
less that that really, your drive is either slow, or the IDE controller on
it is a little old..

Regards, Jim.
