ppp connections using chat in 2.1.129

Has anyone experienced difficulties using chat to make a ppp connection
under 2.1.129 or there abouts? Getting chat to dial seems to cause it to
bawk. Since this is sort of off-topic, you can send me replies directly
if desireable. I would appreciate any assistance. Cheers
