2.1.129 scheduling problem?

Hello all,

There are a few things I found strange... First of all, my environment
is Slackware 3.5 (libc-5.4.46, egcs-1.0.3a, all standard stuffs comes with
the dist.). Kernels are all UP and monolithic.

Problem 1:
pRoblem with dpms and Kernel 2.0.36 & earlier : When the monitor goes into
doze mode, it never wakes up... reminds me of sleeping beauty. The only
solution is to press Ctrl+Alt+Del. The system is rock solid if I disable
dpms. I don't want to blame my M/B there was no problem such as this with
2.0.32. Could it be a problem with X11? I don't have a clue....

Problem 2:
With linux-2.1.128 & 129, when I try to execute any program at a random point,
the system almost become dead. Here's a chronological sequence of events:

0) I was running netscape(4.08) and a couple of shells on X
1) the shell (tcsh 6.07.02) gets blocked when I tried to execute a
command.
2) suddenly system load gradually and rapidly increases
3) I still can safely exit other programs such as X, netscape, slrn,
et tecera
4) I can go back to the console safely, but even trying to execute 'ls'
takes roughly 20-30 second (till it gets executed, the shell
remains blocked. Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Z are not serviced).
5) only cure was to reboot using SysRq commands (Thank God!)

The last time I has experienced such behavior was 2.1.128+scheduling patch
I obtained from the linux-kernel mailing list. At that time, I could not
even login as root because everything I tried to do are simply blocked and
there was quite a delay before it gets executed.

Can someone bother to explain what this really mean?
