Kernel panic: init not found

I compiled and booted 2.1.125, and everything goes fine until the kernel
tries to load init... then i get this error.

Kernel panic: init not found. try passing init= to the kernel

(I don't remember the exact message, but that's more than enough to tell
what's *not* going on <g> )

I looked over my config again, and everything looked good, I even searched
the mailing list archive and tried all the old solutions for the older
development kernels, but to no avail.

I have had this problem since kernel 2.1.120, I keep moving my .config
file over to the directory with the new kernel, and only select new
options, rarely do I remove old ones.

This is driving me insane, I haven't slept in days, this problem keeps
bugging me. If you have any solutions, no matter how far-fetched, please
post.

Thanks in advance.
