ncr53c8xx 3.0i: scsi errors with 2.1.125

I am installing an old dec tz30 (DLT tape). I am having some problems.
The tape is on id=2. I am running 2.1.125 vanilla.

The command I am issuing is a simple "mt -f /dev/st0 rewind"

1) The unit does not give a vendor id, yet /proc/scsi/scsi shows
some. It actually shows the info from the lower id.

2) Any attempt to access the tape gives a scsi error. I need to
know if this is a real drive problem of is the driver failing
to talk to this unit which seems to have a strange scsi
implementation.

3) After the bus reset, why is id=0 being reset when the error was
on id=2?
