I too have a Cirrus, a 5434 w/1 Meg..

Yeah, no vbe2, now doesn't that suck (i'm thinking about emulation, but..)
I had the same problem (just last night) with the same video mode, I used
teh scrollback or switch vc's an dthere was leftover text at the bottom of
teh screen.

I think what causes it is that something has reported an invalid screen
reolution during bootup and the last line (which is not a full line) was
written to. After boot everything appears to work fine (except for the
obvious).
