APM v SMP - what is the problem?

Just curious, why is it impossible to make APM SMP safe?

Would it be enough to make sure only one CPU can issue APM commands to the
BIOS?

Could all the unsafe features be disabled - presumably powerdown should be
safe?!

Cheers
Mark
