One possibly alternative to jitterbug is a system that we use
called frontdesk. It's GPL'ed software that can be downloaded from

www.gnacademy.org -> GNA Laboratories -> Frontdesk

we've been using it as a central e-mail system for several years.

It's missing a lot of Jitterbug's feature, but the one advantage
that it has is that instead of being written as one C file, it
consists of many perl scripts with a central library. This makes
it easy to add custom mail handling routines. For example, you
can write a PERL script that uses the library functions to access a
file and apply a patch and then you can add a link to call that
script from the main mail window. Also adding an e-mail to a
message queue is done by perl, and you can hack that script to
"do stuff" in response to an incoming mail message.
