There's been a lot of discussion the relative merits of binary vs source
distribution of drivers in the context of UDI. I'd like to clarify that
Project UDI does not intend to promote one or the other method of
distribution. Our goal is to enable driver writers to distribute
drivers in any way they see fit, with whatever license terms they
choose, and to then have those drivers be able to reach as wide an
audience as possible, by allowing them to run in a wide range of OSes.

To clarify another point, UDI is an *open* specification. Current drafts
are available for download from http://www.sco.com/UDI. There will be
no licenses or fees required to obtain or implement to the specification.
The review process is also an open one, and anyone is free to give their
input to the design of the specification.

Also, UDI is very well suited to a cross-platform OS like Linux, as UDI
is designed to be platform-neutral as it is OS-neutral. We have run the
same driver source code on IA32, Alpha, PPC, Sparc, and PA-RISC, in both
32- and 64-bit environments as well as big- and little-endian.
