We spent a long time trying to fix this around 2.1.90 or so. I think the
conclusion was that the 2.0/early 2.1 code had always had problems with these
printers and it was just that nobody had noticed before.
It never seemed really worth backporting the fix because the default is to not
use interrupts in any case.
