2.1.124 UP IDE still broken

2.1.124 compiled for UP (i.e. comment out SMP in the makefile, make
distclean) it still hangs during boot, at the same place as in 2.1.123
and .122.

2.1.122, 123 (and probably 124) work OK when built SMP.
Again, this is on a K6/300 430TX UDMA IDE laptop.

hdc: ATAPI 24X CDROM drive, 128kB Cache
Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.14

Ctrl/alt/ sequences are ignored after the hang.

What kind of debug info is needed to help diagnose this?
Should I try commenting out something in drivers/block/ide.c?
