Just a quick comment to say that people using customizable MUAs
can still reply with the old behaviour (which is not to imply that
I agree with the new behaviour, just that it's not the end of the
world -- personally, I think it has some merits, but whether these
outweigh the problems it causes I'll leave for someone else to
decide :-).
With exmh, for example, add the following to your ~/.exmh-defaults file:
*Mops.ubuttonlist: repl repls
*Mops.repl.text: Repl
*Mops.repl.command: Msg_Reply
*Mops.repls.text: Repl-s
*Mops.repls.command: Msg_Reply -form /path/to/kernelcomps
Then put the following in /path/to/kernelcomps:
%(lit)%(formataddr %<{from}%?{sender}%?{return-path}%>)\
%<(nonnull)%(void(width))%(putaddr To: )\n%>\
%(lit)%(formataddr{Cc})%(formataddr{cc})%(formataddr{To})%(formataddr{to})\
%<(nonnull)%(void(width))%(putaddr cc: )\n%>\
%<{fcc}Fcc: %{fcc}\n%>\
%<{subject}Subject: Re: %{subject}\n%>\
%<{date}In-reply-to: Your message of "\
%<(nodate{date})%{date}%|%(pretty{date})%>."%<{message-id}
%{message-id}%>\n%>\
--------
Add the following line to ~/.mh_profile:
repl: -filter /path/to/replfilter
Finally, put the following in /path/to/replfilter:
:
width=80
body:component=">",overflowtext=">",overflowoffset=0
:
:--
:My .sig here
This gives you 2 buttons: "repl" doing a normal reply, and "repl-s"
which replies to the original sender, as given in the "From:" line
in the header, ignoring any "Reply-to:" lines.
*Now* I remember why I use Unix -- it lets me do what *I* want,
not what a given application *thinks* I'll want. Reminds me of
a quote:
``Unix: because everything else is just a pathetic toy.''

PS. Naturally, users of command line MH (or nmh) can use the same
technique by aliasing "repls" to "repl -form /path/to/kernelcomps"
PPS. Yes, I know that not everyone has a free choice of MUA -- I'm
meant to be using M$ Outlook for this, but judicious use of an
Inbox Assistant autoforwards everything to my Linux box where
procmail and MH take care of the rest :-)
PPPS. This assumes a correctly set up replcomps for "normal" replies.
