Any leader needs to delegate. Grooming a replacement, and keeping said
replacement on board as a hot spare, could be done by having Linus delegate
some authority to this person. He already has people he more or less
trusts to submit good patches...

I agree that the grooming process would have to be preceded by (or include
under its umbrella) a selection/weeding-out process....
