Analog tape decks for the most part have stationary heads which is going
to intrisicly limit areal density when compared to most modern digital
tape schemes (and vhs) which use helical scan heads rotatating at an angle
to the media. I suspect that the number you're going to get from an audio
tape is going to be on the low end of the scale that you describe.

As far as speed and density go. We've got a couple of thousand linear
miles of tape formatted at between 800 and 1250 cpi rotting away in the
basement I'm not sure I really want to revist that era...
