SMP 2.1.1[12]x stopped working for Quad Alder (ethernet timeout)

I have a quad alder running SMP 2.1.108, and things seem to be fine. But
recently, I tried kernels 2.1.116, 2.1.120, 2.1.121, and 2.1.122pre2. All
of them have the same problem -- with the MTRR option enabled, the system
boots but ethernet (eepro100) doesn't work. Instead, I get lots of the
following:

Sep 13 15:04:50 minnie kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...
Sep 13 15:05:00 minnie kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status 7048 command 0000.
Sep 13 15:05:00 minnie kernel: eth0: Tx timeout fill index 15 scavenge index 0.

Sep 13 15:05:00 minnie kernel: Rx ring 0000a002 0000a002 0000a002 0000a002 0000a0

00a002 c000a002.

If I turn off the MTRR option, the system hangs after the Real Time Clock
message. It seemd that somewhere around the time the MTRR patches were
introduced, this started happening.

If there is any other kind of information you would like me to provide,
please let me know.

Thanks
