PPP-Dialin Problems

I tried to get this solved elsewhere with no results.
Question: will ppp2.3.5 work with linux 2.0.35 as well as 2.1.120?
System is Computer A win NT4.0-Linux suse 5.3
Computer B win98 and hacked slackware -linux 2.0.35, 2.1.120
mgetty on both systems-ppp3.3.5
Both systems can dial-out OK to my ISP-but neither win system can
connect to any linux system and pass packets. I can login OK and
pppd starts, the win boxes seem happy but NO ping. It's like the
ttyS0 will not allow rw after pppd starts. I get a message in the log
that says "ppp_tty_read: no data (EAGAIN). I see this in the kernel
code so maybe ppp is broken some how? Other people in the network
mailing list see this and are also puzzled.
Any help appreciated.
