Any suggestion how I do this? Do I need to run a user-space daemon to
be an NFS client with locking?

I assumed that the kernel lockd, compiled when I ask for NFS client
support, did this.

I notice code in fs/lockd/mon.c claims to be the kernel statd daemon,
but I haven't a clue what would start it running.
