Most stable smp kernel?

A friend of mine is trying to run Linux on a 4xPPro SMP machine, with an
on-board Adaptec 7880 controller. But it seems really unstable with
2.0.36pre7 and 2.1.119.

Whats the most stable smp kernel at the moment?
