I did testrun my set of (WINE) applications with APM_CHECK_TIMEOUT (HZ/100)
(100 apm_get_event's per second) and the kernel did no longer Oops.

So it seems to fix the problem.

[I do use APM only for screenblanking, so I can't say anything
about other APM functions.]
