Linux FS size limit?

What are the current limits to how big a Linux file system can grow?

I know there is a limit of 16 SCSI devices connected to one machine, but what
limits do other parts of the kernel (md, the VFS layer, ext2, etc...) impose?
Does it matter what architecture I'm running on (i386 vs Alpha)?
