after booting up pre-2.1.108 i noticed several problems, so i took a quick
look at vgacon.c, just to notice that some very useful features were
simply dropped.
(first, i'm not using CONFIG_FBCONSOLE, this is plain old 80x25 VGA
textmode)
- 'console history' is gone. It looks like to be quite hard to get this
one back with the current console code :( vgacon.c flatly states:
/* KNOWN PROBLEMS/TO DO ================= *
*
* - speed up scrolling by changing the screen origin
but all the hooks that did this in the pervious vga.c are gone. I'm a
heavy user of textmode and i'm missing this feature bad :)
- console speed is noticeably down. Eg. a 'time du linux' takes now 0.49
seconds, it took ~0.22 seconds under 2.1.105. Sorry but this now feels
like text scrolling under DOS and SCO. And this is a 300MHz PII ...
casual pixel corruption is visible. I guess this comes from the fact
that we copy the text videomem so often. This happens more often than
the occasional 'screen-jump' happening with origin-based scrolling.
another, probably easily fixable problem:
- when starting up 'mc', a color textmode program, the rightmost column
gets the wrong color and flashes.
if we had at least a penguin at bootup :)
