Who stole my pretty IBM character graphics?

I built 2.1.107 using make oldconfig and the .config file from 2.1.106.
The only difference seemed to be the frame-buffer device support, where I
said no. But with NetHack, the screens used to come up with pretty IBM
character graphics. Alas, no more. Now I seem to get wierd characters
with accents galore. Where, oh where did I go wrong? And how can I
return to the pretty displays of yesterversion? Thanks.
