ok, stupid me.
I do have ppp_deflate. I forgot they came from the kernel, not the module.
I put the following in my conf.modules:

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

I am still getting the IPCP Config timeouts though. You?
