tape drive compression

I am developing a 4mm DAT tape copier system for use within the US Navy. In
order to make exact copies of tapes I need to determine if the master tape
is using hardware compression or not. Sometimes we want to make hardware
enabled compressed tapes, other times we don't.

I know with 'mt' I can control the compression for WRITING to destination
tapes, but I can't see anywhere that mt can tell me if the source tape is
using compression.

Is there some userland program or a way in the kernel/tape driver to
determine this? The drives are HP c1599A 8GB DAT drives.
