Could you check if the chip is *really* a msp3400c-c6? Maybe it is a newer
version (msp3430-xx ?) and the Windows driver kicks it into a msp3400
compatible mode.

"insmod i2c i2c_debug=1" might help too. Should look like this:

bt848-0: < 80+ > <- check if present
bt848-0: < 80+ 00+ 80+ 00+ > <- reset #1
bt848-0: < 80+ 00+ 00+ 00+ > <- reset #2
bt848-0: < 80+ 10+ 00+ bb+ 00+ d0+ > <- start initialisation
